The new rendering engine in ArtCAM JewelSmith gives extremely realistic images

Delcam will launch the 2013 version of its ArtCAM JewelSmith software, which incorporates a range of enhancements including a new rendering package, at the IJL exhibition to be held at Earls Court, London, from 1st to 4th September.  ArtCAM JewelSmith is a special version of Delcam’s ArtCAM Pro artistic CADCAM software, with extra tools for the design and manufacture of rings, broaches, cufflinks and other jewellery.

The 2013 release of ArtCAM JewelSmith also includes a new gem library, where any STL, OBJ, 3DS or 3DM file of a custom gem can be placed and used subsequently to create bespoke jewellery designs.

These designs can then be rendered in the new rendering engine, KeyShot, which will be supplied at no extra charge to ArtCAM JewelSmith customers on maintenance.  KeyShot creates extremely realistic and lifelike design images.  A more advanced rendering package, Advanced KeyShot Rendering, is available as an upgrade which offers additional features including unlimited rendering resolution, render queues, turntable animation and the ability to create 3D web pages.

The main enhancement to the design options in ArtCAM JewelSmith 2013 is interactive distortion modelling.  This allows users to distort either vectors or reliefs by bending or stretching the design and to see the results in real time.  As well as giving total flexibility in the creation of new designs, this option will shorten design times by allowing changes to be visualised as they are happening.

The new release has also seen significant improvements in vector creation and editing for ArtCAM JewelSmith users that create their designs from 2D drawings or sketches.  New snapping options make vector creation much quicker.  These offer the ability to snap to anything in the design, including any point on a vector, intersections between vectors, guidelines and key points within a model, such as the origin, centre and corners.

Vectors can be joined automatically when they are mirrored using any of the many mirroring options.  This allows faster creation of vertical and horizontal vector patterns.  Vectors can also be offset interactively by dragging the offset to the required position as well as by a specified amount.

Users working from imported data will benefit from improvements to the Vector Doctor, which has been enhanced so that imported vectors can be cleaned up more quickly.  Duplicate vectors, and vectors longer, shorter, larger or smaller than specified sizes, can be identified immediately.  In addition, a new option helps to spot unobvious open vectors that could cause machining issues.

Finally, designers can create moulds from ArtCAM JewelSmith models by removing material from their design to create a draft surface whilst retaining the base shape of their model.
