European “FoFdation” Project aims at the universal information system foundation for sustainable manufacturing in the "Factory of the Future". FOFdation is co-funded by the European Commission within in the 7th Framework Programme and is associated with the “Factories of the Future” public-private partnership.
This project FOFdation is co-funded by the European Commission within the 7th Framework Programme, as part of the European Economic Recovery Plan (EERP) adopted in 2008. The EERP proposes the launch of Public-Private Partnerships (PPP) in three sectors, one of them being Factories of the Future (FoF). Factories of the Future is a EUR 1.2 billion program in which the European Commission and industry are collaborating in research to support the development and innovation of new enabling technologies for the EU manufacturing sector.
Manufacturing is the driving force of Europe's economy. Today’s major challenges for EU manufacturing companies, operating under productivity pressures, greater product variability and environmental constraints, are clearly identified as global cooperation with multiple supply chain partners, production optimization, and tracking and management of information to meet new requirements like traceability, security, sustainability. These requirements lead to the need for a universal manufacturing information system based on a data exchange standard that allows disparate entities and their associated devices of a manufacturing system to share data seamlessly in a common format. factories must continue to meet the highest standards of lean, agile, flexible and sustainable production.
